10 Reasons Why I'm Glad I Chose a Cat Over a Dog (After having Akari)

The previous article was more about logical reasons people might typically go for a cat. If you missed it, be sure to check it out here:

This time around is more of my personal experiences of why I'm so grateful to have Akari in my life. There were many unexpected things I discovered after living with a cat that made me appreciate their companionship.

1. Cats can Learn Tricks Too!

Contrary to popular belief, cats are more than capable of learning a trick or two. Akari knows a few tricks including sit and give her paw. She used to know the "Bang!" trick where she would fall to her side, but I need to constantly practice it more. She only does it some of the time now. And I think with the idea of cats knowing tricks is still rare makes the accomplishment more rewarding.

2. Cats can Walk with a Leash!

Every time I take Akari out for a walk (basically eating grass), I get a lot of shocked reactions. But you have to remember that they are animals just like us and they need even a little bit of exercise. Cats don't like the leash, but now that Akari understands it means going outside she actually gets very excited and waits right by the door.

3. Cats can Show Love!!!

When I come home, she always gets out of her bed and runs to the door to greet and headbutt me (so cute!). Even though cats are independent, they need companionship just as much as we do, and Akari will come running.

4. Cats are Active and Playful

As much as I like Garfield, I think he played into society's stereotype of the lazy cat. Sleep is an important part of a cat's life. However, they also need to hunt or at least act out that scenario. With the right toys, they can fulfill their needs and it can be a great opportunity to bond with your cat.

5. Cats are Natural Pest Exterminators

I can't stand insects. The worse one of all are spiders. Whenever I see a spider I just put Akari right in front of it and she takes care of the rest. I don't know if dogs will do the same.

6. Purring is Really Special

It's so unique to experience Akari purring. She becomes a little motor that kneads her favorite cushion. I've read that purring can mean different things to a cat, but for Akari it means she's extremely happy.

7. Cats Love Belly Rubs!!!!

Akari does this thing where she'll curl up and, twist a little bit with her chin up, that means she wants a belly rub. I've heard that exposing their belly (the most vulnerable spot) means they genuinely and wholeheartedly trust you. It's just another special moment I value when she shares it with me (pretty much every day!)

8. Cats Have Clear Nails

Cats are notorious for scratching up furniture like sofas. Well I didn't know this before but cats have clear nails just like we do and that makes it easy to cut them. NEVER use a human nail clipper. Cats have their own circular nail clipper and just snip close to the pink part (just not too close). Dogs have black nails so you can't clearly tell. I heard just by walking them on the sidewalk or concrete will naturally trim them though.

9. Traveling With a Cat Isn't Hard

I would say Akari is a feline traveling connoisseur. I have had no problems taking her on road trips or even on plane rides. I know it is an option to administer a light injection for cats to relieve stress, but honestly if you start young, they'll be fine. Akari's favorite mode of transportation is on a plane. In fact she complains only when the plane has landed, but the entire flight she is very quiet and comfortably sleeps under the seat in front of me. Unless you have a small dog, they tend to check them in and put them with the other luggage. I've read terrible stories of some dogs dying from dehydration, because there is no air ventilation down there.

10. Cats Get Into Mischief

We've all watched some kind of cat video. Cats are so funny to watch in their own way. Akari for example is not very graceful even though she pretends to be. (I don't have a picture of her failing at jumping, but this is me and her trying to make a snowcat)

Hope you enjoyed learning a little bit of how it's like to live with Akari and any other cats like her. Got any questions or comments? Please feel free to leave them below or email me!
